Dear Reviewer,

Welcome to my portfolio, my name is Christian Kowalski and I am an English major with a concentration in Professional Writing & Rhetoric and minors in Political Science and African & African-American Studies.

The core curriculum at Elon challenges first-year students to step out of their perspectives and immerse themselves in cultural and global topics and studies that may be foreign to them. My core classes introduced me to literature on community development, food insecurity and human rights--all of which have become focal points in my current work and involvement. This emphasis on global education really inspired me to view the world with a more empathetic lens and devote my time and study to global and local issues.

With my passion for civic engagement and service cemented by Elon's commitment to global education, I aspired to find an avenue where I could use my skills to help provide sustainable change. I explored many different classes trying to find the perfect fit to expand upon my work in civic engagement and service. It was through my research within the English department that I was encouraged to pursue a major in Professional Writing & Rhetoric.

The PWR track has provided me the tools to effectively communicate and collaborate with local and international partners. This portfolio includes work from classes, undergraduate research, student-led organizations and an internship.

The content is organized under three sections: Awareness, Advocacy and Research. Each section highlights the different functions of rhetoric as a tool for promoting sustainable change. Furthermore, each individual part is accompanied by a contextual narrative that outlines the context of the assignment, decision-making process and a reflection on what I gained from the experience. Every section works together thematically to demonstrate the idea of rhetoric building communities.

Community development has been an important mission for most of my work here at Elon. I've used my PWR identity to collaborate with my peers in order to create effective content for sustainable change. As a tool to inform, advocate, or synthesize, rhetoric can help develop the growth of knowledge and mobilize people toward action.

Thank you for taking the time to review my portfolio. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at my email or phone number, which are attached to my resume.
