One of the desired outcomes for rhetoric is finding a way to empathize with the audience. It’s one of the most challenging things to do, placing yourself in someone else’s shoes. No matter how many academic or professional documents I write, finding a way to step out of my perspective will be difficult. There are so many experiences and ideas in this world I’m unfamiliar with. Rhetoric should challenge us to think beyond ourselves.

Being aware means taking a step beyond your own experiences and immersing yourself in topics, people and culture that might be unfamiliar to you. Awareness broadens your understanding and allows one to become more empathetic. Having this awareness creates connections and bridges gaps between those you otherwise wouldn’t have anything in common with. Being aware is being informed.
